  10. As mentioned in the just-prior post, I finally found some of my long-mislaid
  11. UFO file material; while thumbing through some of the notebooks, the following
  12. item also caught my eye.

  14. Appearing in the _Stars and Stripes_ (a US Military newspaper), Monday,
  15. November 26, 1962 (yes, 30+ years ago):

  17. ``           PROF SAYS BEINGS FROM OUTER SPACE HAVE VISITED EARTH

  20.     Los Angeles (AP) -- Some of the best scientific minds in the country
  21.     were stumped when a slender, dark-haired young man chalked on the
  22.     blackboard this equation:

  26.     The speaker was Dr. Carl Sagan, a 28-year-old assistant professor
  27.     of astronomy at Harvard University.

  29.     His audience consisted of several hundred members of the American
  30.     Rocket Society, gathered for his luncheon address.
  31.  
  32.     The equation was his way of expressing the mathematical probability
  33.     that intelligent beings from outer space have visited earth.
  34.  
  35.     Sagan soberly explained that in his equation `N' stands for the
  36.     number of advanced technical civilizations in the universe possessing
  37.     the capability of interstellar communication.
  38.  
  39.     `R' is the mean rate of star formation averaged over the lifetime of
  40.     the galaxy.
  41.  
  42.     `FP' is the fraction of stars with planetary systems.
  43.  
  44.     `NE' is the mean number of planets in each system with environments
  45.     favorable for the origin of life.
  46.  
  47.     `FL' is the fraction of such planets on which life does develop.
  48.  
  49.     `FI' is the fraction of such inhabited planets on which intelligent
  50.     life with manipulative abilities rises during the lifetime of the
  51.     local sun.

  53.     `FC' is the fraction of planets populated by intelligent beings on
  54.     which an advanced technical civilization rises.
  55.  
  56.     And `L' is the lifetime of this technical civilization.

  58.     Sagan said information in his formula is based on current estimates
  59.     by astronomers.  In making calculations, he assigned each symbol an
  60.     arbitrary numerical value.

  62.     As expressed in numbers, Sagan said, the formula means that at least
  63.     1 million of the 100 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy have planets
  64.     which have developed civilizations capable of travel between the stars.

  66.     "Let's say that each of these civilizations sends out one interstellar
  67.     expedition per year," he said.
  68.  
  69.     "That means that every star, such as our sun, would be visited at least
  70.     once every million years.  In some systems where these beings found
  71.     life, they would make more frequent visits.  There's a strong
  72.     probability, then, that they have visited earth every few thousand
  73.     years.

  75.     "It is not out of the question that artifacts of these visits still
  76.     exist or even that some kind of base in maintained, possibly
  77.     automatically, within the solar system, to provide continuity for
  78.     successive expeditions.

  80.     "Because of weathering and the possibility of detection and
  81.     interference by the inhabitants of earth, it would be preferable not
  82.     to erect such a base on the earth's surface.  The moon seems one
  83.     reasonable alternative.

  85.     "Forthcoming photographic reconnaissance of the moon from space
  86.     vehicles -- particularly of the back -- might bear these possibilities
  87.     in mind."

  89.     At a news conference, Sagan predicted man himself would be capable of
  90.     interstellar flight at close to the speed of light "within a century
  91.     or two."

  93.     Asked if he believed in flying saucers, he said: "I do believe there
  94.     are objects which have not been identified."
